Daniel Hess, MD
Dr. Hess grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After high school he worked on the farm for a year before moving to Baltimore as a volunteer at a small Christian school. He then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in 2005. During his undergraduate studies he also worked as a unit secretary at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center – a formative experience which set the stage for his interest in emergency medicine. He also spent a year living and working in the small southern African country, Swaziland. There he worked with a group doing community-based HIV/AIDS education as a participant in the service learning program of a faith-based relief and peace organization. That experience nurtured an interest in international medicine which has taken him back to Africa for medical work in Zambia and Botswana. Dr. Hess matriculated to the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2005 and later served on the medical student council of the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA). Prior to graduation in 2009, he was recognized as a National Outstanding Medical Student by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). That year began his residency training in the combined emergency medicine/internal medicine residency program at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Hess served as chief resident for Emergency medicine in his 5th year of residency. Subsequently he served as the internal medicine chief resident (Assistant Chief of Service) at Christiana Care the following year while working part-time as an emergency physician with DFES. Dr. Hess lives in Wilmington with his wife and children and enjoys the outdoors, playing with his kids and home improvement projects.
