Steven Kushner, MD

Dr. Kushner grew up in the borough of Queens, NYC. At 14 years old he joined the first of what would be five EMS/Fire-Rescue Squads (BLS and ALS) that he served with from Junior High School through the first two years of medical school. Dr. Kushner attended Cornell University in beautiful Ithaca, NY for his undergraduate degree in microbiology. He then moved to New York City where he worked for four years as a Senior Research Technician at the Radiologic Research Laboratory at the College of Physician & Surgeons of Columbia University. During that time he also earned his Master of Public Health degree from the Columbia University School of Public Health. Dr. Kushner then returned to upstate New York to attend medical school at the State University of New York, Health Science Center at Syracuse. Upon graduation, Dr. Kushner moved to his current home in Delaware where he completed his Residency in Emergency Medicine. This was followed by a Research Fellowship at the Clinical Pharmacology Research Center (formerly the Medical Research Institute of Delaware) on the Medical Center of Delaware campus. Dr. Kushner then worked as the Research Center Staff Physician for an additional year. As a Fellow and Research Staff Physician, Dr. Kushner worked clinical shifts for DFES part time, before coming on full-time with DFES in 1996. In addition to his Emergency Department duties, Dr. Kushner has served as a member of the Christiana Care Institutional Review Board (IRB) since 1999, becoming Co-Chair as of July 2012. When not working, Dr. Kushner enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter and their three cats. One of his passions is music, including playing the piano and guitar. He played piano professionally in a wedding/dinner-dance band during high school and on college breaks. He continues to enjoy playing and feels privileged to have been asked to play the piano during the cocktail hours for the DFES 40th and 45th Anniversary dinners, the Christiana Care Medical-Dental Staff Dinner in 2014, and the Westside Health Center 25th Anniversary Gala in 2013.
